the RED badges of courage 010

The Kizuiani Primary School is predominantly Islamic with a student population of more than 2700. This school, like many others in Tanzania does not have an AIDS education programme. It is bulging at the seams with an over abundance of students but scarce resources to provide the level of education desired by the over stretched staff. The children have no knowledge of the disease or why some wear red badges, except that ‘they are sick’. The school head estimates that probably 50% of his students are HIV+ but he had no means to mandate their testing with little cooperation from their carers.
